Avalanche utilizes Snowball, a custom designed “Proof of Stake” (POS) consensus algorithm. Users are required to stake AVAX to become transaction validators. Validator nodes in a subnet repeatedly query each other to determine the validity of the network’s transactions until they reach a common decision — and thus establish network-wide consensus.
Avalanche claims it can process up to 4,500 Transactions Per Second (TPS) per subnet and has unlimited capacity for generating subnets.
